The motion sensor and door sensor require batteries, they fit in the body of the sensor. The cover simply pops off to reveal the battery space.
The motion sensor uses a CR123A battery - this is a short fat round battery - not much bigger than the AA battery (lasts around 3 years) and the door sensor is 2 AAA batteries (last a minimum of 2 years).
